Autism and employment – a podcast series

As part of their internship at BeyondAutism, Alex and Martin have created a podcast series where they interview special guests on different topics relating to employment and autism.

In this episode we speak to Youtubers, Andy Burns* (IndieAndy) and Daniel Jones, (The Aspie World) to get their take on the last year and the impact it has had on autistic people.

In this episode, Alex and Martin discuss why having a job is so important for autistic people and learning difficulties. They also speak to a number of colleagues from BeyondAutism to get their views on a questionnaire they shared with staff on autism and employment earlier in the year.

Episode 4: Will Brexit offer more job opportunities to disabled adults?

Alex is joined by Victoria and Quinn, equality officers at trade unions, the FDA and TUC. They explore whether Brexit will offer more job opportunities for disabled adults due to less workers coming over from overseas and what the pros and cons could be of Britain leaving the EU.

In this episode, Alex and Martin discuss the different types of jobs and how suitable they are for autistic people. They interview PJ, a paramedic from the USA, and Emily, a teacher from London to get their views and thoughts on the topic.

Episode 6: Job loss, routine and support

In this episode, Martin discuss the impact job loss can have on autistic people, and some strategies to use when in that situation. He explores the importance of routine and seeking support when needed. He talks to Hazel, the parent of an autistic adult, and Richard, a Vocational Advisor.

In this episode Martin and Alex speak to Emma Price, Head of Tram House School, and guest speaker, author and public speaker, Andrew Edwards. They discuss bullying in the workplace, why it is so common for autistic people and how we can stop it.

About the creators

Alex is a creative writing and media studies graduate. She is passionate about advocating for equal rights for autistic people and learning disabilities. Alex hopes this series will educate employers and raise awareness around the topics discussed. In her spare time, Alex enjoys going to concerts, watching horror films, and doing quizzes with friends and family.

Martin has worked in various backgrounds, including Law, Finance, Customer Service and Construction, over the last 13 years. His pastimes include film, television, games, music (he recorded the Jingle for our Podcast), and of course his family. Martin always likes to try new things.
